Liverpool in the last few days have been linked with Chelsea’s 19 year old Dominic Solanke. With the young striker, failing to agree a new contract at Stamford Bridge, his preferred choice is Anfield, should he leave Chelsea.
The young striker is been considered by some as a replacement for Daniel Sturridge. Sturridge is expected to leave Liverpool this summer and his exit leaves Liverpool short on attacking options up front.
With Divock Origi still learning his trade and Danny Ings, still injured, Solanke is a player that could come in to fill the hole which will be left by the talented Englishman.
Solanke spent the 2015/2016 season on loan with Dutch side SBV Vitesse, where he made 25 appearances and scored 7 goals. He created 20 chances, he won 37% of his average duels, his shot accuracy was 52% and his average pass accuracy was 73%.
He has made 45 appearances in the English youth system from U-16 up to U-21 and has scored 22 goals altogether.
He is yet to make a first team appearance for the Blues and with rumours circulating that he has rejected Chelsea’s latest contract, it seems the young English man will soon be leaning on a wall at Melwood.
Chelsea will be reluctant to lose yet another striker to Liverpool, after the sale to Sturridge has somewhat come back to haunt them. Chelsea could have done with Sturridge still on their books last season as they struggled for any sort of form.
Solanke is deemed one of the brightest talents to come out of the Chelsea academy over the last number of years & his failure to agree personal terms on a new contract at the club is a concern for many of the fans.
As you saw above, Solanke didn’t set the world alight at Vitesse. While he’s still young, a player of his rumoured calibre should really have done much better in what is a poor Dutch league.
While Klopp will say Solanke is one for the future, I’m not sure fans will accept Liverpool purchasing yet another player who may or may not play for the club.
With Liverpool badly needing a striker, I’m not sure Solanke is the man for the job, unless he comes in and hits the ground running.
But the fact that he’s Antonio Conte’s third choice striker this season, I’m hoping that Klopp keeps his cheque in his pocket this time.
He wasn’t deemed good enough to come in and replace Diego Costa this season when he was out of the side, after his spat with Conte.
So who is Dominic Solanke, he’s a 19 year old Chelsea striker, who has 7 goals in 25 appearances on loan at Vitesse. Is he good enough for Liverpool, only time will tell. But if one manager can extract the best from the young Englishman, it’s definitely Jürgen Klopp.
That’s of course he signs for the club.
