The Fence-Sive Woes

Defence, The Fence, these all seek to address one key issue, PROTECTION. How protected is the backline of Liverpool? Can it hold out without causing inferred damages? Will it be tactical enough to concede the least possible number of goals this season? These and many other questions are left unanswered as it is too early to judge. However, it’s also quite substantial to deliberate on since problems of defense have been seemingly insurmountable for quite sometime now at the red end of Merseyside.

After two games into the 2016/2017 season, Liverpool have conceded a total of 5 goals and are joint club with the highest number of goals conceded so far this season with Stoke City. The recent performances of the reds have resurrected the ghosts of some pretty woeful defending last season. Manager Jürgen Klopp on identifying this problem last season said, “We know about this problem, I am sorry to say it is not a problem we can ignore,” Klopp said. “It is obvious we didn’t handle it too well. We are a football team and we always work on our weaknesses. It is not too easy in this short period in between [matches] but we spoke about it really intensively. We had good talks together – it’s not the first one but hopefully the last one.”

The gaffer noted very clearly his identification of the defensive problems.

He didn’t have much of an opportunity to make any signings in relation to this very predicament of the reds. But a summer transfer window is virtually being rounded up and has Klopp reinforced his defensive arsenal???

Veteran Jamie Carragher speaking in an interview with Skysports said, “”Klopp’s had a summer now and looked at where he needs to strengthen but the big-money buys have been at the other end of the pitch.” Klopp has spent more upfield than in the backline so far and currently shows no indication of making any more signings.

Are we good to go?? I believe some serious work needs to be done. It’s not about the lack of personnel. Klopp has the technical know-how in relation to aiding the lads to step it up a gear defensively and helping us salvage more points this season. This season promises to be great for Liverpool and I am very optimistic about it.
