The good thing about the current squad, is we have several options in most positions now. Apart for the right back and the left back position, we have good cover and decent back-up players all over the football pitch.
Every team with an ambition to be real title challengers through out the season must have a squad with several players who can cover all areas of the pitch. In actual fact, only a few clubs have squads like this, and Liverpool are finally one of them. Other clubs worth a mention too in this regard are (among others, too, I suppose) Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester and Arsenal (when all their currently injured players are back in training, that is).
My pick of a starting XI for the first game of the season against Arsenal would be a 4-2-3-1 formation. I also assume Daniel Sturridge and James Milner will not be fit for the start of the season and therefore will not feature in Jürgen Klopp’s match day plan. Belgian Christian Benteke hasn’t played in any of Liverpool’s pre-season games, and will certainly not be in the match plan. Neither will Italian Mario Balotelli.
Mignolet – Clyne, Lovren, Klavan, Moreno – Henderson, Can – Mané Firmino, Coutinho – Origi
