Same Old Liverpool

Wow, just wow. After the defeat to Newcastle at St James Park today our world has come crashing down. Liverpool were poor today. For whatever reason Jürgen Klopp decided to start Christan Benteke up front, supported by Roberto Firmino and Jordan Ibe. And from the off it didn’t work. For a player like Firmino, Christian Benteke is too static. Firmino needs to play with players who will move when Liverpool are attacking and sadly Benteke isn’t that type of player. I’m not saying he’s not a goal scorer, he has proven that he is but sadly for him he just doesn’t suit the Klopp system.

But it’s unfair of me to point the finger solely at Benteke because there was a lot of passengers in the Liverpool starting eleven today. A lot of players just didn’t play there usual game today and for me there was a massive gap in the Liverpool midfield today and that was due to Emre Can missing the game due to suspension. Liverpool has no bit in midfield today and Lucas Levia and Joe Allen were back to their usual mistake laden selves. They were unable to make any impact in midfield and Newcastle steam rolled them time after time after time. I for one can’t wait to see Emre Can and Jordan Henderson pair up in midfield. I’m actually giddy at the thought of those two playing in front of a decent Defensive Midfielder.

I would hate to have been in the Liverpool dressing room at the end of the ninty minutes today as I reckon it wasn’t pretty. I hope Klopp tore each and every player a new one and I also hope that he has seen enough to now know that Joe Allen and Christan Benteke should be no where near the starting eleven from now on.

But it wasn’t all negative today. For me (and I have my tin hat on) young Jordan Ibe and Dejan Lovren were Liverpool’s best players. Yes I know I said Dejan Lovren played well for Liverpool today but he has been slowly but surely improving for Liverpool since Jürgen Klopp has come in. I’m starting to think the problem in the Liverpool defence isn’t Lovren but it is infact Martin Skrtel. I think the way forward for Liverpool in defence will be Mamadou Sakho and Lovren until Klopp has the chance to move on Skrtel and bring in the players he wants to. As well as Lovren l thought that young Jordan Ibe had a great game for Liverpool today. He was constantly a threat for Liverpool when going forward and was a constant thorn in the Newcastle side. The only disappointing thing for him today was his final ball but he’s only young and that’s one thing I expect he will improve on as he gets older. But again having Christan Benteke ahead of him in attack didn’t help him either.

I for one can’t wait that Liverpool’s injured stars are match fit and are able to play week in week out and not coming on as impact subs to get their match fitness up. With attacking options like Adam Lallana, Phillipe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Ibe, I can see Liverpool storming up the league table especially if they play the way Klopp wants them to play. Hopefully today’s result was only a blip and from here on in it’ll be positive results and performances. Otherwise social media is going to be a nightmare again.
